Annual Scarecrow Contest

Haywood County Master Gardeners started a new tradition in October of 2005. HCMG are now the proud sponsors of the scarecrow contest held each year during our annual Hatchie Fall Festival. A record 39 entries participated in the 2006 contest. Each scarecrow was placed on the courthouse lawn the week before the festival and remained there the rest of October.

A Giant Scarecrow

Also adorning the lawn of our courthouse during the Hatchie Fall Festival each year is a giant scarecrow - the handiwork of Haywood County Master Gardener Pat. Pat, along with fellow Master Gardeners and friends, constructed the giant scarecrow out of steel poles, bales of straw and many yards of fabric.
Our Giant Scarecrow (left) stands over 10 feet tall.

Haywood County Master Gardeners are members of the Tennessee Master Gardener Program

The title "Master Gardener" is used only and exclusively in the Tennessee Extension Service Master Gardener Program in which trained and certified Master Gardeners answer gardening questions.

Certification as a Master Gardener is restrictive in nature, and is only valid when the individual is participating in the Tennessee Master Gardener program.

Certification is issued each year only to those who continue to be actively involved in the program.
